The dHoek Experience

Life at dHoek
In the summer, visitors can take a refreshing swim in the pool before retreating to the shade of the more than 800 olive trees that surround the farm. Evenings invite the pleasure of a fragrant Karoo barbecue, next to the pool, enhanced with herbs from the garden, followed by dining beneath a sky illuminated by millions of stars. As the night deepens, guests drift into the most restful, undisturbed sleep.

A Location Like No Other
One of its greatest advantages is its location—a stretch of farmland at the foot of the mountains on the outskirts of Barrydale, on the border between the Overberg and the beginning of the Karoo. This means vast, open skies, rolling hills, and air so crisp it feels like a tonic. And then, of course, there is the golden light, found only in the Karoo. Simply sitting in quiet contemplation is enough to appreciate the transformation as dusk settles over the purple-veined hills, and a washed-out blue summer sky fades into a dramatic sunset followed by the most amazing stargazing.

Restored Heritage
The house has been restored to its original shape and the interiors completely redesigned. The rooms have been decorated with unique pieces of art, collected over the years, along with treasured family heirlooms. The result is an effortlessly elegant and visually soothing space—classic in style but with a sense of restraint in the arrangement of objects. Every detail is carefully considered, creating a feeling of order without a trace of formality. The walls are a parchment-like white, with soft, desaturated Karoo tones introduced through fabrics and rugs.
For those who visit dHoek more than once, subtle changes may become apparent—a newly added chair, a turn-of-the-century washstand, or a Persian rug with just the right degree of fading. The house has that kind of accommodating nature and it’s always tempting to make room for just one more “irresistible” find.
